On Monday (15), the Ministry of Health updated the vaccination plans against the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) for the year 2021 in Brazil. Until the last update, the folder vaccinometer reported that 3.02 million Brazilians have already received two doses of a vaccine against COVID-19. However, the scenario is expected to change with the 562.9 million doses that should be made available in total for this year.
Of all the doses that Health expects to distribute by the end of the year, about 20 million have already been sent to the states and the Federal District. In percentage, the distribution made is equivalent to about 0.2% of the amount of immunizations expected.
Thinking of the national immunization against the coronavirus in 2021, the Ministry of Health awaits the receipt of vaccines produced by different pharmacists around the world, in addition to the immunizers already adopted in the country, CoronaVac and Covishield (Oxford / AstraZeneca).
To enhance immunization, the following vaccines are expected: Covaxin, from the Indian pharmaceutical company Bharat Biotech; Sputnik V, from the Russian institute Gamaleya; the formula of the North American company from Pfizer and the German biotechnology institute BioNTech; and the Johnson & Johnson compound. Of the new formulas, only that of Pfizer-BioNTech was approved by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa).
According to the Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, the number of doses actually contracted, to date, is 422.9 million. That’s because 110 million doses of the Covishield vaccine and 30 million doses of CoronaVac, both included in the schedule, have not yet closed deals for extra doses.
Minister Pazuello also stated that the technology transfer process that will allow national production of the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (IFA) – the raw material for vaccines – in the country is two months ahead. “We already have all the equipment installed. Chemical engineers have been trained and we are due to start production in April. With that, we started to have independence in the production of vaccines ”, he affirmed.
In addition, the Ministry maintains negotiations with the modern pharmaceutical company and Sinopharm for the eventual purchase of an additional 13 million doses, which did not enter this sum.
During the press conference, the minister said that by the end of the first half of the year, the vaccination program would have served all priority audiences. Thus, by the end of 2021, the country will be able to immunize the entire population against the coronavirus. “We are going to vaccinate priority groups and a good part of the population until the middle of the year. We will reach half [da população]. And we will reach the end of 2021 with the entire population. With the supply of vaccines growing, the speed is likely to increase ”, defended Pazuello.
