A customer recounted his surprise after receiving a bottle filled with urine as part of a food delivery during confinement.
Oliver McManus said he received the suspicious-looking yellow liquid with a HelloFresh meal kit on Sunday morning.
He tweeted an image to the company with the question, “Hi FreshUK, I’ll keep it simple: why did I receive someone’s bottled urine as part of my order? I await your response on this one.”
McManus added: “Give me an address, I’ll send it to you and you can smell it in case you’re skeptical!”
The company’s social media team responded, “Words really fail to describe how sorry we are.”
Several Twitter users responded with the usual barrage of jokes, puns, and abuse, with some suggesting it was apple juice. McManus responded, “It really isn’t.”
HelloFresh does not supply drinks with its meal kits and some people speculated that the error may have occurred after a delivery driver used the bottle to go to the bathroom to save time. McManus tweeted that he believed it was a delivery error, adding that “the box was not properly sealed and [la botella] it was just sitting on top. “
He told The Independent that he had been “caught off guard” not only by the delivery but also by the reaction on social media.
“The last thing I would like is for someone to get fired or get into trouble as a result of this incident. It is unfortunate that it happened, but I’m sure it raises some broader questions about working conditions in the UK.”
