In an interview, Dave Bautista spoke about “Dune” and explained why the science fiction film means so much to him.
Most probably know Dave Bautista best as Drax from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). But that doesn’t really do the 52-year-old justice. Yes, under James Gunn he finally reached a larger audience with the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films beyond his fans from long-gone wrestling days. But he has not been satisfied with pure action roles for a long time, Bautista wants to be recognized as an actor.
And so he strives for more demanding roles despite his 1.98 meters and his gigantic stature. A first step was taken when he played the replicant Sapper Morton in director Denis Villeneuve’s “ Blade Runner 2049 ”. The role was small, but Bautista used the little time he had to make a lasting impression. His Sapper Morton was even the focus of the accompanying short film “2048: Nowhere to Run”.
Apparently, Bautista filmmaker Villeneuve was so impressed that he cast him directly as Glossu Rabban Harkonnen in the remake of Frank Herbert’s “Dune”, as Bautista revealed in an interview with Collider. It was an incredible honor for him:
“I never approached him because I didn’t want to be that type of guy who would ask, ‘Hey Denis, is there a role for me?’ I never wanted to be that guy. But actually, he called me, he didn’t say something like, ‘Well, there is this role.’ He asked me directly if I wanted to be there and play this role. I was so surprised that I didn’t even know what to say, except yes. I feel very proud that a director like Denis Villeneuve just gives me a call and offers me a role in a film that I know will grow up. People have been waiting for years and years and years for this. And people are so passionate about books. That he offered me such an important role in this film was a personal announcement. That kind of emotion you can’t buy that feeling of pride. These are the few moments in life when I feel it when I have the feeling that my life has value, that I have achieved something in my life. ”
Is that why Dave Bautista wants to leave the MCU?
With all his striving for more meaningful roles, one would think that he might see himself outgrown the role of Drax. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why he doesn’t see a future for himself as Drax in the MCU? James Gunn himself had already let it be known that the story he wanted to tell would end with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”.
And while Bautista was infinitely grateful for the chance to be part of the MCU, he had the feeling that Marvel Studios did not take full advantage of the opportunity to give Drax more depth:
“I think you passed the chance with Drax. He has such a great backstory. As a performer, it would have given me the opportunity, in a not entirely altruistic way, to show different emotional sides of Drax. And physically too. Because when you look at Drax, even if he looks like a tough guy, you look at him and he looks scary. But he gets his bum spanked more than any other Marvel character. But we missed a big chance with this character and I don’t think it will come back again. But I look forward to ending this trip.”
So it will be interesting to see where this journey Bautista will lead. He has already taken another big step: He will be seen alongside Daniel Craig and Edward Norton in “ Knives Out 2 ”.
