The success of James Cameron’s Titanic was largely due to the chemistry between Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. The two young stars instantly connected, making the 1997 epic the iconic classic it is today. Over 20 years after the film’s release, their bond is still strong, and Winslet gives new insight into it in a new featurette, Titanic: Stories from the Heart, found on the bonus disc of the new 4k Ultra HD release.
Winslet recalls that she and DiCaprio “clicked immediately, right away.” She describes DiCaprio as a “ferociously intelligent man” and praises his focus on the craft. The close bond they formed on the Titanic set is still alive today, and they often connect in real time.
It’s interesting to note that there was a chance that DiCaprio wouldn’t have landed the role of Jack opposite Winslet as Rose. Cameron revealed that he had to “sell” the young actor to the studios at the time. He had to talk DiCaprio into reading for the part, and then had to sell him to the studio.
Winslet is proud of the film and has always maintained that Cameron is a complete genius. She praises his storytelling and scriptwriting, saying he is extraordinary at creating strong roles for women.
Fans can look forward to more behind-the-scenes content when Titanic drops in 4K Ultra HD for the first time on Dec. 5. The two-disc set includes a Blu-ray disc with five hours of new and legacy bonus content, including the new Stories from the Heart featurette. A limited-edition collector’s boxed set is also available, featuring a coffee table book, a blueprint of the Titanic, movie prop reproductions, and sheet music for “My Heart Will Go On.” The bonus disc also features new behind-the-scenes content with producer Jon Landau, taking audiences behind the making of Titanic and its trailer.
