Tyler Perry, the renowned filmmaker and entrepreneur, has confirmed that he is interested in purchasing the majority stake in Black Entertainment Television (BET). During an interview with ET’s Nischelle Turner on his movie set, Perry shared that he had been involved with the network for four years and was keen to take it over. BET is currently owned by ViacomCBS, but it is believed that several Black entrepreneurs, including Perry, Byron Allen, and Diddy, are vying to buy the network. Despite the competition, Perry expressed excitement at the prospect of BET being Black-owned again, saying it was great to see so many Black people able to buy the network. Perry has been a minority stakeholder in BET since 2017 and was also involved in launching the network’s streaming platform, BET+.

Perry has already achieved success on BET+, with his show “All the Queen’s Men” emerging as the network’s no.1 show. He has also created other hit shows on BET, including “Oval,” “Sistas,” “House of Payne,” and “Assisted Living.” During the interview, Perry praised ViacomCBS for their handling of BET, stating that they had “done a phenomenal job with it. They didn’t let it fall by the wayside; they didn’t let it go into dust. They nurtured it and took care of it.” Despite his positive comments, Perry reiterated that he was keen to take full control of the network: “If it’s possible, I’m gonna take as much of it as I can.”

Currently, it is unclear when a sale of BET will go ahead, but Perry confirmed that there have been conversations and that he is “beyond interested.” He expressed his desire to see the network returned to Black ownership, stating: “I think there was sadness when Bob sold it, and I think there’ll be happiness when it’s Black-owned again.”

The potential sale of BET has sparked interest and excitement among the Black community, with many seeing it as an opportunity to create a media platform that accurately reflects their lives and experiences. If Perry were to buy BET, he would become one of the few Black media moguls in the industry, alongside Oprah Winfrey and Byron Allen. His success in the entertainment industry, combined with his desire to create a platform that uplifts Black voices, makes him an ideal candidate to take on the challenge of owning and running BET.
