Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets Review

The Fantastic Beasts saga has returned to the fray with a new installment. However, the long-awaited new entry into the Wizarding World continues to face a fundamental problem: and that is not being able to recover that magic that made the Harry Potter saga unique.

The latest installment of the Fantastic Beasts franchise recounts David Yates behind the scenes, who was in charge of the last four Harry Potter feature films, and the first three Fantastic Beasts films, which had a five-film saga planned .

Fantastic Animals 3 has had a difficult arrival in theaters, since it was not only affected by the pandemic, but also by problems around its members, both in front of and behind the cameras. It should not be forgotten that the studio decided to remove Johnny Depp, who played the villain Gellert Grindelwald, due to allegations of domestic abuse against him. There is also Ezra Miller, who recently faced a series of legal problems, and JK Rowling, the creator of the story and screenwriter of the film, who is in the crosshairs of many fans for her transphobic comments.

Dumbledore and his new army

Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets, the third film in a planned five-entry saga, opens with a big scene between Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) and Gellert Grindelwald (now played by Mads Mikkelsen). The meeting between the two serves to understand their relationship and the desire of both characters to change the world, although from two totally opposite visions.

This is where we find a Dumbledore unable to face Grindelwald due to the blood pact they made years ago, which leads the headmaster of Hogwarts to gather a group to try to stop his rival’s advances. Dumbledore’s new army includes magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne); his and Auror’s younger brother, Theseus (Callum Turner); Newt’s assistant Bunty (Victoria Yeates); Professor Eulalie Hicks (Jessica Williams); Yusuf Kama, the older half-brother of Leta Lestrange (William Nadylam); and Muggle baker Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler). They will all try to stop and fight Grindelwald and his followers, which includes Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller) and the seer witch Queenie (Alison Sudol), who was about to marry Jacob before turning to the dark side.

Like the previous Fantastic Beasts movies, there are many characters at play, integrated into a world that seems familiar (mostly due to the presence of Hogwarts and Dumbledore), but at the same time seeks to expand its horizons, introducing new elements, characters and places. This time, Newt’s magical creatures and knowledge are better integrated into the plot. For example, we can see how the young magician helps a Qilin, a kind of magical deer whose power lies in being able to distinguish the purity in the heart of a magician and who is capable of seeing the future, an ability that will be key in the film. .

Although once again Newt is relegated to the background, his progress as a character is more noticeable, much more focused, self-confident and even capable of moderating his unfiltered brutal honesty. However, he lacks much development, just like the rest of the characters, especially Dumbledore and Grindelwald. While Harry Potter fans will be able to reminisce about Albus’s history and his past with the current villain of the saga, new fans of the saga could be left halfway in understanding the story.

Mikkelsen transforms into a worthy adversary of the Wizarding World

Point in favor is the presence of these two characters on the screen takes the best moments of the film. Mikkelsen turns out to be a great option to embody Grindelwald, who despite his sinister intentions manages to combine a certain warmth and friendliness, which makes it clear why there are many who want to follow in his footsteps. The same could be said of Law and his young version of Dumbledore, determined but aware of the mistakes he has made in his wake, both in relation to his family and Grindelwald. Here we find a Dumbledore who is reluctant to lead, but who fights to make the world a better place where muggles and wizards can live in harmony. The actor hits the key when interpreting it with a mixture of hope and melancholy.

The secondary characters shine a little more in this installment, with more action involved, and that aim to establish the comic tone that the story needs at times. Who deserves separate mention is Jacob, whose integration into the Wizarding World is one of the strongest points in the story.

Compared to the previous two films, which served to introduce the story and the characters, Dumbledore’s Secrets has much more freedom to play with all these elements, setting the stage for what is to come, which could serve as a bridge between Animals. Fantastic and Harry Potter.

Unfortunately we do not know if this saga will have a future. Despite the fact that the studio had planned a franchise with six feature films, the first three films have not found many followers among fans, much less among critics. The box office debut of The Secrets of Dumbledore was not as expected, a key element in determining whether or not the story will continue, which is a shame because for the first time Fantastic Beasts manages to hit the key, establishing a balance between all the elements that had been introduced until now, with dramatic moments, other funny ones and a magnificent visual commitment.
