Frank Herbert’s Dune has long been recognized as a classic work of science fiction. Despite many attempts to adapt his epic story for the big screen, admirers of the novel are still waiting for a suitable Hollywood adaptation. They will have another shot at it very soon.

Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Timothée Chalamet, and a host of other A-list actors, will be released this fall by Warner Bros. Studios.

Dune is one of the year’s most anticipated pictures, and you can learn everything you need to learn about it just here.

What is the plot of the film ‘Dune’?

Dune is a science fiction novel written by Frank Herbert and released in 1965. The story is set on the inhospitable planet Arrakis, which is rich in the “spice” known as melange, a highly desirable chemical that may let people live longer and be more conscious.

Arrakis is ruled by the Atreides family. When they are duped, Paul Atreides is compelled to go on a journey to save his family and the whole city of Arrakis.

Despite the fact that there’ll be sequels, this adaptation of Dune will only cover the first half of Herbert’s original book.

Who is Denis Villeneuve, the director?

Even if you do not know Denis Villeneuve by name, you have probably seen a few of his films. Villeneuve is the director of Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Sicario, and Prisoners, for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Director.

Villeneuve had already shown his ability to manage large-budget, complex projects, but even he recognized that Dune would be a huge job and insisted on splitting it into two films from the start.

Villeneuve has also campaigned for Dune’s big-screen premiere. When WarnerMedia revealed that its 2021 slate of films, including Dune, will be released on HBO Max on the same day as cinemas, Villeneuve criticized the studio for lack of communication on the issue while simultaneously expressing his support for the theater-going experience. The couple seems to have reconciled, but it is obvious how Villeneuve wants his picture to be seen.

When is ‘Dune’ going to be released?

For a long time, fans have been awaiting the release of Dune. It was supposed to debut on November 20, 2020; due to the epidemic situation, Hollywood’s schedule changes, it was moved back until December 18, 2020. Along with a slew of other big-budget pictures set to debut in 2020, Dune has been put back to 2021. Dune will be released in theaters on October 22, as we now know.

Moreover, despite Villeneuve’s disapproval of the decision, Dune will be available on HBO Max on the same day it is broadcasted in countries that have the service. These day-and-date releases are free for HBO Max subscribers on the $14.99 plan, but they are only available for a month after the film’s debut on the streaming site.

Is a trailer for ‘Dune’ available?

People first saw a Dune teaser in September 2020, while we were all still expecting a 2020 release date. It was not to be, unfortunately. Since then, we have seen a few trailers, including this last one, which comes only a few weeks before the film’s premiere in the United States.

As you can see, Dune seems to be very magnificent. Its massive size is on full display, and we get to see the bulk of the cast.

What about previous ‘Dune’ attempts?

As previously said, this is not the first time a director has attempted to adapt Dune for the big screen. David Lynch (Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive) notably brought his sensibility to Dune in 1984. The picture, which featured Virginia Madsen and Kyle MacLachlan, was critically derided.

Another effort was attempted by cult director Alejandro Jodorowsky, who was eventually unsuccessful in his attempt to adapt Frank Herbert’s book. On the other hand, Jodorowsky’s Dune is a fantastic documentary that recounts the filmmaker’s concept for his adaption, which featured Salvador Dali and H.R. Geiger.

Will there be a sequel to ‘Dune’?

As per, Villeneuve intended Dune to be the first of a two-part narrative. Still, no formal green light for a sequel has been granted. Villeneuve was concerned about this when he rejected the HBO Max/Warner Bros. proposal, fearing that streaming would reduce Dune’s potential profit and risk the chance of a sequel. In the end, we will not know for sure whether a sequel will be formally revealed or not.

To be fair, Godzilla vs. Kong and Space Jam: A New Legacy both topped the box office in their first weekends in cinemas and on streaming. It is difficult to say how much effect an exclusive theatrical release would have had on their total statistics.

But it is not only in cinema that we may see some more Dune stuff. HBO Max has given the go-light to a prequel series titled Dune: The Sisterhood, which will premiere in 2019. Dune: The Sisterhood’s showrunner, writer, and executive producer, Diane Ademu-John, has just revealed, but there is no word about a possible release date.
