Itziar Morte

Re/Member is the live-action feature film adaptation of the popular Japanese novel, Karada Sagashi, by author Welzard. The movie follows Asuka Morisaki (Kanna Hashimoto), a teenager who sees the apparition of a dead child named Haruka on July 5. Together with her childhood friend Takahiro (Gordon Maeda) and four other classmates, they discover they are trapped in a paranormal phenomenon called “Body Search” – a game where they must find every piece of a murder victim’s dismembered body, or be doomed to relive the same 24 hours for eternity.

Unfortunately, the movie fails to live up to its source material due to its flimsy characterisations and sloppy storytelling. Every character present is a clichéd Breakfast Club archetype, with no layered arcs. The story’s lore is jumbled and vaguely explained, and the movie does a poor job of escalating, let alone maintaining, the suspense it begins with.

Despite the clunky writing, director Eiichirō Hasumi and his production team at least do a great job of making the film visually appealing. The design of the Red Person is effectively terrifying, using contortionist stunt doubles and practical effects alongside VFX to create an entity that looks and moves convincingly. However, this is not enough to save the movie from its terrible dialogue, lazily written character dynamics, and sloppy storytelling, making Re/Member a movie best forgotten.
