The United States is a massive country yet when it comes to finding somewhere to visit, the same places crop up. New York City, Las Vegas, Chicago, San Francisco, Hawaii, Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, and Monument Valley are just some of the places that regularly appear when searching for somewhere to go in the US. However, there are many lesser-known locations that offer something just as special or unique as those listed above, with Tamanawas Falls being a good place to begin.

Tamanawas Falls

Tamanawas Falls is in Mt. Hood National Forest, Oregon and although it does not compare to Niagara Falls in terms of size, it more than makes up for it thanks to the location. The falls tumble over a 150’ lava cliff near the eastern base of Mount Hood and to reach the falls you must walk through a quiet, secluded woodland. If you wish, you can climb up the rocks and when at the top of the falls, you are met with a spectacular view. While staying in Oregon, there are several other waterfalls you can visit, including Toketee Falls, Latourell Falls, Salt Creek Falls, and Ramona Falls.

Ghost town of Bodie

California, thanks to the climate, is a popular state for visitors and is home to many famous cities and landmarks. However, if you want to get away from the popular locations and see something different, we recommend a trip to the ghost town of Bodie. This deserted town is located east of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range in Mono County and is a former mining camp that originates from 1859. At its peak, Bodie was home to around 7,000 residents but following a boom in the 1870s and 1880s, Bodie declined in the 1900s. By 1920, there were only 120 people remaining in the town and today, you will not find a single soul in Bodie. However, several of the buildings remain intact and you can walk around the town, with many of the building interiors exactly as they were left. There is furniture, plates, and even a store with products. It is a fascinating experience and Bodie is one of the top lesser-known attractions to visit in the US.
