Characters and costumes provide clues as to the possible story of ” House of the Dragon “.
The time calculation at GoT is given in the years before Aegon’s conquest (E) and after (nAE).
Broadcaster HBO is releasing the first pictures of the cast of “House of the Dragon”, offering a first look at the characters in the series. The costumes of the characters and the set provide details that suggest a possible plot of the “Game of Thrones” prequel.
The Targaryen Civil War: The Greens and Blacks.
The Targaryen house, like much of Westeros, was divided by the dance of the dragons. The belligerent factions are known as the Greens and the Blacks. While the blacks support Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen’s (Emma D’Arcy) claim to the Iron Throne, the Greens are on the side of Alicent Hohenturm (Olivia Cooke) and Aegon Targaryen.
The costumes give subtle references to the factions. While Rhaenyra dresses in more traditional Targaryen colors, those loyal to Alicent Hightower wear green. This is how the groups get their names. At a tournament in honor of Alicent and King Viserys, Alicent wore a green dress, while her guest Rhaenyra wore black and red.
Daemon Targaryen’s costume and the parallels to Viserys and Rhaegar.
Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) will play another key character in House of the Dragon. While there isn’t much that can be read from the costume, it shows how well Daemon fits in with the ranks of the other Targaryen princes from “Game of Thrones”
Some set photos show the prince at the side of his niece and later wife (you are not used to anything else from “Game of Thrones”) Rhaenyra. But so far it remains hidden whether the two will get married in this GoT timeline.
Otto Hohenturm as the hand of the king.
The set photo of Alicent Hohenturm shows her next to her father Otto (Rhys Ifans). The clever man is, as is easy to see, the hand of the king. Even if it was clear from the start that Otto would take this position, it does give you an indication of the finish line of the series.
Otto lost the position of the hand in 109 AE in the dispute, believing that the sons of Viserys and Alicent should inherit instead of Rhaenyra. After the death of his replacement, Lyonel Kraft, he got the position 120 AE back. Accordingly, the story of “House of the Dragon” begins very early or after Kraft’s death, in the year of the red spring.
Diversity and inclusion in “House of the Dragon”
One aspect of “Game of Thrones” was particularly criticized in the past: there was clearly a lack of diversity. People of other skin color were rarely given an important role or they began their ascent as slaves, like Gray Worm or Missandei.
The set photos give hope that things will go differently with “House of the Dragon” and that the makers are focusing on more diversity and inclusion. Probably the most prominent role of Corlys Velaryon, the sea serpent, is cast with Steve Toussaint. That is at least a clear sign to make Westeros more diverse.
In our timeline, we list important events from House of Dragon and Game of Thrones. The years are given with: in the years before Aegon’s conquest (E) and after (nAE). In English, it is spoken of “After the Conquest” AC.
