How to Watch all the Fast and Furious Movies in Order

Fast & Furious 9 is finally here and it is just as wild as you would expect that bringing the whole gang back together. Fast & Furious 9 that opens on Thursday 24th June 2021 that is with Vin Diesel and co that welcomes cinema-goers back with open arms. The film has just as many octane thrills, speeches and improbable about the importance of family as ever.

While the majority of the films do follow on in chronological order from one another there is one major exception that rather muddies with waters with the third entry in the franchise that is fitting between the sixth and seventh films.

The Fast and the Furious (2001) follows an undercover cop Brian O Conner who integrates himself into a heist crew run by Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel).

How to watch the Fast and Furious movies: chronological timeline order

Almost all the Fast & Furious films follow on from each other and there is just one single standout exception which you already know is The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift. Although it was the third instalment that was to be released in cinemas it is actually set between F&F 6 and 7. This swerves away from the story of Brian and Dom and follows a completely new set of characters led by Lucas Black who is a student forced to move to Japan to avoid jail time.

The Fast & the Furious 

The movie was directed by Rob Cohen and is the first film in the series that set the stage by building a bonafide action movie around the culture of drag racing. The movie was released in 2011 and introduced Paul Walker’s as an LAPD office who goes undercover to take down a crew of carjackers. Things get messed up when a genuine friendship develops between Vin diesel and a romantic relationship with Dom’s sister.

2 Fast 2 Furious

This is the most standalone entry in the franchise 2 Fast 2 Furious that follows Brian O’Connor to Miami in the aftermath of The Fast and the Furious. The only Furious film to not feature with Vin Diesel in any capacity and it is sequel’s biggest contribution is the introduction of Tyrese Gibson as Roman Pearce.

Fast and Furious

This is the series where things get screwy and the fourth movie in the series actually represents the third part chronologically and story-wise as well. It is a direct sequel to the first film. Both Walker and Diesel and establishing Han Lue as a former associate of Dom Fast and Furious takes place after five years. It is also the first time we meet Gal Gadot as team member Gisel.

Fast Five

The film that also pivoted away from car racing and directly glorious nonsense director Justin Lin Fast Five picks up immediately after Fast and Furious. This is also the first time we meet Dwayne Johnson as the extremely large and spinoff worth DEA Agent Luke Hobbs.

Fast & Furious 6

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift

The third film of the franchise is actually the sixth one chronologically, taking place just a few months after Fast & Furious 6. Although the studio in no way planned for this so the same stuff absolutely does not line up and part of the fun is you just accept it.

Furious 7

The director of James Wan’s Fast film takes place just under a year after Fast & Furious 6 and it slightly overlaps with the end of Tokyo Drift.

The Fate of the Furious

Director F.Gary Gray’s 2017 film picks up just a few months after Furious 7. In addition to that, a chase scene featuring a nuclear submarine and film also introduces key characters like Charlize Theron’s criminal mastermind Cipher and Helen Mirren as Shaw matriarch and Magdalene Shaw.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

It is actually quite unclear right now when exactly this spinoff film takes place and it is completely safe to say that Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw also teams up here sometime. After becoming bros in The Fate Of The Furious but there is some compelling evidence like the terrorist Brixton saying he was nearly killed “eight years ago” in 2014.
