Actress Millie Bobby Brown, best known for her role in “Stranger Things,” will be releasing her debut novel titled “NINETEEN STEPS” on September 12, 2023. The book will be published by William Morrow, an imprint of HarperCollins. Inspired by her own family history, the historical novel follows the story of 18-year-old Nellie Morris during World War II in Bethnal Green. The story is based on Brown’s personal connection to the Bethnal Green Tube Disaster, which became the largest single loss of civilian life in the U.K. during the war, and how her grandmother Ruth survived the accident.

The official synopsis for the book reveals a tale of love, loss, and secrets. After a chance encounter with an American airman named Ray, Nellie falls in love and starts dreaming of a broader world despite the chaos that surrounds her. However, an air raid turns their world upside down, and the consequences are catastrophic. In the face of tragedy, Nellie discovers that love and happiness can still prevail against all odds.

Brown expresses her gratitude to her Nanny Ruth for inspiring her to write this book, which is very personal and close to her heart. The novel is a tender and inspiring story of female resilience and the human spirit that portrays the strength and courage found in family, friendship, and community. Liz Stein, the Executive Editor at William Morrow, negotiated the deal and found the haunting true tragedy at the core of the novel to be incredibly moving, and the unforgettable portrait of love in the time of war to be enchanting.

Brown is excited to keep her grandmother’s story alive through her work, where the tragedy that happened so many years ago will touch the hearts of readers all over again.
