The final episodes of season 13 of NCIS Los Angeles have been giving fans of the franchise something to talk about, especially after the release of chapter 19 entitled “Live Free or Die Standing”. Where special agent Marty Deeks (played by Eric Christian Olsen), makes a clear reference to Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) from NCIS, with a story that both shows have not dealt with in any crossover so far.
In the episode, viewers saw how Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) and Marty Deeks learned from their partner Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) upon arriving at work, where they all received envelopes that they could only open when all the members of the NCIS LA team were gathered. Inside was a check for $10,000 that they had to spend and couldn’t deposit in the bank.
In addition to the money, there was also a letter from agent Eric Beale (Barrett Foa), who left earlier in the season with his partner Nell Jones (Renée Felice Smith) for Japan. However, in the letter “Beale” wrote to them that he missed them and that he wanted to share his wealth with his companions to bring them happiness and help in their lives.
“The strange boys and by sharing my wealth, I hope things bring happiness to both of us. He had also donated the same amount to his favorite charities.”
However, after reading the letter, Deeks makes a curious comment that makes a connection to the main show in the franchise: “Maybe he was inspired by Gibbs.” Early in NCIS Season 19 in Episode 10, Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) and Dr. Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) and other members received $10,000 dollars. But, Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) and Jessica Knight (Katrina Law) didn’t, due to being the newest members of the team.
Interestingly enough, fans of both shows in the franchise have been talking about it, especially the way Marty Deeks would have found out about the money NCIS members received, given the limited crossovers between both dramas, unless made it public in agency circles, or that some NCIS member like Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) kept in touch or visited Los Angeles.
Whatever the case may be, this is just the latest in a long line of Leroy Jethro Gibbs references in the shared universe following the departure of lead star Mark Harmon. It only remains to be seen if this little connection will bring any future story or a new crossover between both NCIS dramas.
