Just today, just 21 years ago, the Cortéz family of spies film hit theaters for the first time to make history. With a budget of 35 million, Robert Rodríguez accumulated more than 147 million dollars worldwide thanks to this fun family action and espionage film, which among many other things, introduced us to Danny Trejo as Machete (who had his own spinoff , which left behind the familiar tone)

In the film, Gregorio and Ingrid Cortéz, played by Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino, are two parents who simultaneously act as secret spies who, after a complicated mission, are kidnapped and only their children, Juni (Daryl Sabara) and Carmen (Alexa Vega). They can rescue them. If you were born in the 90s or 2000s, there’s no way you can forget the Spy Kids, and luckily, they’ll be back.

The acclaimed Mexican director behind other iconic films such as From Dusk Till Dawn will return to direct for the Spy Kids saga in a new version of the films that he will make in collaboration with the producers of Skydance and Spyglass Media, as well as Netflix. On the other hand, we still do not know if this new installment will be a simple reboot or will follow the fashion of “requels”, where the franchise will be brought back with new characters and the participation of the original cast in minor roles.

The filmmaker, who recently worked with Netflix on the hit family action film We Can Be Heroes, (which itself served as a Sharkboy and Lavagirl spinoff), will write, direct and produce the new film that will introduce the world to a new spy family.
