The ghost of Will Smith’s slap in the face of Chris Rock during the Oscars continues to haunt and not in the best way for the actor. Despite the lukewarm sanction by the Hollywood Academy, the actor has already begun to suffer the impact of what happened during the award ceremony.

In the last few hours it became known that the sequel to Bright, the original Netflix movie in which the actor starred in 2017, has been canceled by the streaming company. The film was directed by David Ayer, who had previously worked with Smith on Suicide Squad in 2016.

Smith starred in the Netflix fantasy film

Bright follows the story of two cops, one human (Smith) and the other orc (Joel Edgerton), who must put aside their differences and work side by side to protect a young elf girl and a magical relic from falling into the wrong hands. And that threatens to destroy everything.

Although the film was not well received by critics, taking a 27% acceptance on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience was much more enthusiastic about the film. It even became one of the most viewed titles on the platform at its premiere.

Due to its success on the streaming service, Netflix quickly greenlit a sequel. Since then, Bright 2 has been progressing very slowly. Especially after the departure of screenwriter Max Landis, who in 2019 was denounced for sexual abuse. Instead, Ayer would work with Evan Spiliotopoulos, who worked on the screenplay for Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast movie.

The truth is that the future of Bright is no longer very “bright” to say. Journalist Lucas Shaw of Bloomberg reported that Netflix “completely abandoned” the sequel. As revealed by Shaw, the reason why the streamer decided to cancel Bright 2 has nothing to do with the Smith incident at the Oscars.

Although the reason is not clear, the journalist also reveals that Disney, through National Geographic, has decided to delay the production of Pole to Pole, the series with Smith in which the actor will travel to the North Pole and the Pole South.

In recent weeks, it became known that Warner Bros. and DC Comics had decided to indefinitely suspend the Deadshot project, the solo film about the character that Smith played in The Suicide Squad in 2016. Likewise, they were also on standby. fourth installment of Bad Boys and Fast and Loose, another of the projects that the actor had with Netflix.

We will certainly have to wait and see what the future holds for Will Smith. Weeks ago it became known that the actor was registered in a rehabilitation clinic to deal with his anxiety and anger problems.
