Stephen King has since its inception become a horror genius whose works go beyond limits of literature. His wide repertoire has led to adaptations on the small and big screen. One of them es Firestarter, better known as Fire Eyes. Starring Drew Barrymore, follow the story of a couple who get special abilities after some experiments. Fruit of their relationship is born Charlene, a girl with pyrotechnic skills, which puts his family in danger. The film is according to King one of the worst adaptations of his work. So, almost 40 years later, they already prepare a new adaptation of the novel and the director of this account how different will it be from the original.
Keith Thomas will be in charge of bringing Charlene and Firestarter to the big screen once again. The director will do it with the script of Scott Teems, best known for his work on Halloween Kills. And although the original material remains Stephen King’s novel, this will be different from the 80’s. Thomas tells in an interview with ComicBook.com that this is necessary not to do the same. This new adaptation will investigate much more in the sentimental aspect, which will be the key element. Teems ‘script achieves just this and will focus on the parents’ complication in taking care of a girl with this condition.
“The source material is no different, right? I mean, it’s the same book they were inspired by for the same movie. But what we learn from the book is different. You can change the angle. For me, we rely on the emotional aspects. We rely on parenthood and how it is. So how do you raise a daughter, especially a daughter with these kinds of powers. That’s where the script went and I think that’s something different than what was done in the original film. “
Find a new angle for this adaptation that will seek to make the story finally work in the big screen. The new Firestarter can learn from the mistakes of the ’80s film. For its part, not the first reboot from a play by Stephen King. In recent years I have already passed with Carrie The It. Apart from the more sentimental tone, Thomas says that this tape will be much more raw and will explore the book in detail. We will continue to see Charlene’s powers in action. But the goal will be to do something that reach the audience.
“The book is very rich, there are many things that do not appear in the original film. There are things like that that we are using. At the same time, I feel that within the films that I like, there is a visceral quality that I did not see in the 80s. A rawness that is in the book and that interests me a lot. And by luck, I think everyone involved feels the same way. “
The Firestarter reboot will star Zac Efron. Recently Deadline I confirm the signing of Michel Greyeyes as Rainbird. The movie still does not have a release date.
