The celebrated premiere of Straight Outta Compton in 2015 marked the emergence of F. Gary Gray on the list of directors capable of reconciling ambitious blockbusters with a (supposed) authorial voice.

One that we could not distinguish in the failed Men in Black International but which has new opportunities for expression in front of it: this is the case of the adaptation of the video game Saints Row (whose development has not been news for a long time) and a new project announced by The Hollywood Reporter. It is an action-comedy entitled Muscle that will involve the director’s reunion with Vin Diesel, with whom he worked on Fast & Furious 8 resulting in a huge box office success.

Diesel is currently pending the premiere of Fast & Furious 9 for this July 2 after a long series of postponements, and the details of both his character and Muscle’s plot are for now mired in the strictest secrecy. On the other hand, we do know that STXfilms is behind the financing and that both Diesel and Gray would act as executive producers, although the most striking aspect of the film is everything related to the script: based on a draft written by Scott Taylor and Jermaine Johnson, this is written by John Swetman and Malcolm Spellman… And yes, the Spellman surname may sound quite familiar to you these past few days.

Apart from working on the Empire series, this screenwriter has starred in several headlines on account of his work as showrunner on Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a Marvel series that came to an end last Friday. A few hours after its last chapter, in fact, Spellman was confirmed as the scriptwriter of Captain America 4, which in theory would narrate the vicissitudes of Sam Wilson ( Anthony Mackie ) as the new bearer of the shield. As for Muscle, announced in parallel to Captain America 4, it has not yet confirmed a filming or release date.
