In 2007 the big screen received the first live-action adaptation of Transformers. The beloved animated series that began in the ’80s had finally hit the big time thanks to director Michael Bay. The man behind Armageddon (1998) delivered a story that exceeded fan expectations and unleashed huge box office success. With this in mind, Paramount Pictures gave the director the green light to expand the universe of the shape-shifting beings from the planet Cybertron.

Between 2007 and 2017, the Transformers saga took place with five films. Undoubtedly most fans agree that the story declines with the third film Dark of the Moon. The excessive amount of explosions, the strange twists in the plot and other details did not finish convincing the public.

Explosions are never lacking in Bay’s films.

Despite the criticism, Michael “Explosions” Bay decided to continue with the story, until he finally brought closure with Transformers: The Last Knight. Michael was recently interviewed at the premiere of his new movie Ambulance, an action movie with Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Eiza González. During his chat with the Unilad site, Bay revealed why he stopped making Transformers movies.

According to the director of La Roca and Bad Boys, he received advice that he could not ignore, which came from the great Steven Spielberg. The acclaimed director told Bay to finish the story with the third film, something to which he agreed, but Paramount asked for a fourth installment and as the story was a significant box office, he went on to the fifth film. The director acknowledged that he “should have stopped” but also admitted that he “had a lot of fun” with the saga.

Steven gave Bay the best advice.

“I’ve made too many movies of them. Steven Spielberg said, ‘Just stop at three.’ And I said I’d stop. The studio begged me to do a fourth, and then that made a billion. . And they begged me again. I should have stopped. It was fun doing it,” Bay explained.

Thanks to Bay’s departure, the franchise regained air with Bumblebee (2018). This reboot of the saga was well received by the fans, especially for the changes that the Autobots and Decepticons presented. The good thing is that the story will continue to expand with the film Transformers: Rise of the Beast, dated June 2023.
